Built Big Drum for "Play It By Ear" Exhibit at Bay Area Discovery Museum

In 1999 I worked with exhibition staff to create a lovely big purple drum from a 55-gallon barrel. The drum has a seat on top labeled "Vibration". You ride it while playing and feel the sound throughout your body.

The exhibition staff made the drum body and painted it up. I knew about drum making based on skills I learned from master drummer Mbaye Diagne, a Senegalese griot. So I was the one who given the opportunity and I made it a drum. It turns out that this drum has changed my life in wonderful ways!

The Bay Area Discovery Museum's "Play It By Ear" exhibit has been traveling around the country for years as part of the Youth Museums Exhibit Collaborative.

It's nice to see it is still up and drumming. It was exhibited and featured again in 2009 on the Bay Area Discovery Museum website.
